A number, live for long enough to receive a verification message, and then gone. Signing up to something without handing over the number your bank also texts is the ordinary use, and it is the one this exists for.
The fee is the whole problem

One retail third party does exactly this: buys numbers near five cents and sells at a dollar fifty. That is thirty times, and it is not greed. It is the lowest price that makes sense once the fee is paid.
